After a number of recent leaks regarding a new upcoming thermostat from Ecobee, the Toronto based company has finally announced their latest device. Dubbed the “New Ecobee SmartThermostat“, the latest hardware is an iteration over the company’s previous generation devices. While the previous leaks have already spoiled all of the latest updates, here’s the rundown incase you may have missed them.
Starting with the design, Ecobee chose to follow the same basic shape as their previous efforts, although this new version sports an all glass front, which is a welcome upgrade. Touchscreen sensitivity has also been increased, for easier more responsive controls at the actual device. Under the hood, Ecobee has added a quad-core processor which the company states that it enables “advanced machine learning and AI” with regards to Amazon’s Alexa being built in. The company also claims that the new thermostat “three times the speed” when it comes to wireless connectivity using dual band Wi-Fi.
The New Ecobee SmartThermostat also includes an upgraded speaker, which when paired with Amazon’s Alexa, it provides a cleaner and richer sound. The company states that the new speaker offers “twice the intensity” and a “wider dynamic range” which users will hear through the built in ability to play music and podcasts from various sources, such as Apple Music. Bluetooth streaming support has also been added, and while the upgraded speaker is nice, in many cases, a home thermostat is not in the most convenient of locations to be able to hear.
The star of the show with the new SmartThermostat is the upgraded room temperature sensor. The latest sensor has been renamed to SmartSensor and it features a revamped design that is a huge improvement over the original. The new SmartSensor features a clean, almost seamless design, and has softer edges, creating somewhat of a playful look to a rather mundane device type. A new magnetic stand is also included with the SmartSensor, and can be attached or removed quickly without and fiddling or tools required. A wall mount is also included with the SmartSensor to allow for more placement options. Battery life has been significantly improved, with the SmartSensor now capable of lasting up to 5 years with the included battery. Finally, pairing range for the SmartSensor has been increased to 60 feet, and improvements have been made to reliability and connectivity.
The new Ecobee SmartThermostat is available now directly from Ecobee, or from various retailers, such as Best Buy and Amazon. The new thermostat comes with one SmartSensor in the box, and retails for $249. Additional SmartSensors can be purchased in packs of two, for $79.99, which is the same price as the company’s original room temperature sensors. Ecobee is touting that they are committed to maintaining an “open ecosystem” and the latest thermostat supports not just HomeKit, but Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, and SmartThings.
