Ikea’s Sonos Powered AirPlay 2 Enabled Speakers Now Available

Announced back in April of this year, Ikea has announced that their Sonos powered AirPlay 2 speakers are available now in stores worldwide. The unique partnership, which combines audio expertise from Sonos with Ikea’s low cost manufacturing models produced 2 distinct speakers under the name SYMFONISK.

The cheaper of the two options, coming in at just $99 is a bookshelf speaker that is available in black or white finishes. The speaker is touted as being the “smallest speaker they have ever made” by Sonos and feature a clean minimalist design. The speakers are wall mountable with an optional bracket (for an additional $20), and pack in support for Apple’s AirPlay 2 functionality, allowing them to be paired with existing speakers in your home, or even with automations and scenes later this year with iOS 13.

Ikea’s SYMFONISK line also includes a rather unusual speaker and lamp combination, which will retail for $179. Available in both the same black and white finishes as their bookshelf speaker, the SYMFONISK lamp somewhat resembles Apple’s HomePod, albeit with a plate base design and a lamp shade protruding from the top. Surprisingly, Ikea’s lamp does not include any additional smart functionality, which seems like a potentially missed opportunity to bring in more users to their connected home platform through simple on/off remote functionality or even just by including a TRADFRI light bulb.

Both products under the SYMFONISK line are available today at Ikea stores worldwide. Unfortunately, these are only available for purchase at the physical store for the time being, with online availability to come soon. What do you think of the Ikea and Sonos partnership?
