Arlo Updates Pro & Pro 2 Cameras with HomeKit Support

Today, Arlo, makers of the popular line of wireless cameras, has came through on its promise to add HomeKit support to a couple of select products. First mentioned back at the Consumer Electronics Show held in January, the company originally promised support for Apple’s smart home platform in Q1, but ultimately, the company missed on that goal. We saw signs that support was incoming over the past few weeks, as users were prompted to provide Home access after an App update, which the company dismissed as a bug and that this permission should be denied. Just a few weeks later, the company’s App added a splash screen that stated “Arlo Cameras Now Work with HomeKit” but a firmware update to add support was not released in tandem.

This all changed today, when the company finally made a firmware update available that adds support for some of the Arlo line. The Pro and Pro 2 Cameras, which have been the only specific cameras mentioned for HomeKit were updated today, which is handled by the Arlo App. After the update, the Arlo App will display the aforementioned splash screen seen days before, and an option to “Add Cameras to HomeKit” is shown. Once selected, the App will auto-populate the HomeKit setup code, and the cameras will be added to the Home App using the familiar screens which allow a user to assign a name and a room. After confirming the details, the cameras can be found in the associated room within the Home App, and on the favorites screen if they are marked as such.

The Arlo Pro and Pro 2 Cameras join the company’s only other HomeKit enabled product, the Arlo Baby, and come in various configurations that include multiple cameras and a bridge to manage communication. Both updated models are truly wireless cameras, with built-in rechargeable batteries, and have features such as 2-way audio, siren, cloud storage, and can be placed either indoor or outdoors. The cheapest Pro 2 starter kit retails for $479.99, but it can often be found in the mid $300 range at retailers such as Amazon. What do you think of Arlo’s integration with HomeKit?
