Coming in as somewhat of a surprise this week, Apple has released the latest rounds of the iOS13 beta for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. While we are getting closer to the traditional September release, iOS 13 has been pretty rough in some spots, leading us to believe that we would stay on a slower path for a while. This was not the case however, and developer beta 6 has arrived, but unfortunately, it does not bring much in the way of changes to the Home App. Let’s dive in.
The first thing that we noticed in beta 6 was that devices with multiple sensors were now easier to review. Previously, a 3D touch or haptic touch action was required to see the other sensor data from a room overview. In beta 6, a simple tap of the device “tile” is all it takes, which is certainly much quicker, but it is still not a substitute for just having each metric displayed as its own tile.
Next up is camera notifications from the Home App. In previous versions, whenever motion would occur, a thumbnail would be presented in the notification, and when a 3D or haptic touch is used to display more information, it would simply expand the still image. Now this notification will actually display a live view of the camera directly from the additional “details” portion that you get when you perform a 3D or haptic touch. We also noticed that the devices that are within the same “room” as the camera are also presented within this new live camera view, which is a nice touch.
No new splash screens were added in beta 6.
Bugs & Remaining Issues
In some what of a regression, some text alignment issues that we saw in earlier beta builds has returned in some of the Home App screens. A new example of this can be found when going into the “settings” portion for a thermostat. The humidity metric labels are shifted, creating a messy look.
We are also still seeing the bug relating to the appearance of a credit card frame when using the “I Don’t Have a Code or Cannot Scan” function, which is surprising considering that we are now 6 beta releases in.
Unfortunately, the automations portion of Shortcuts was not restored in beta 6. As with the last release, this is still marked as being “temporarily unavailable”. Let’s hope that this is indeed the case, and that it is not pushed back until a .1 or .2 release.
