What’s New in the Home App in iOS 13.1 Beta 1?

Apple pretty much shocked us all today by dropping a beta for iOS 13.1, about a month before iOS 13 is most likely going to be released. The newest beta seems to be a way of providing developers and testers with a version of iOS 13 that includes some of the planned features for iOS 13 which are looking like they have been pushed back. Features such as personal automations and shortcuts have been restored, and some additions from the latest macOS beta have made their appearance. Without further ado, lets dive in.

As we mentioned, the newest icon set found in the most recent beta of macOS Catalina have made their way to iOS. The new icons include more options for lights, doors, windows, plugs, locks and fans, as well as adding some glyphs of device types, such as light strips that were not available previously.

While most of the icons were found in the Catalina beta, we did uncover a new icon for sprinklers, which, well we don’t really know how to describe. This new icon essentially looks like an older style radio or tv, with an indicator in a circle to depict whether not it is running. Even though the icon is new, it is not animated like its predecessor.

Speaking of animations, we failed to mention in our macOS Catalina beta recap that lights now come to life when turned on with a subtle glow effect.

Under the Home settings panel (accessed by tapping on the house icon on the favorites tab) a new section labeled “Show Me on Apple TV” has been added. This option is found when selecting a family member, and displays all of the available Apple TV’s in your home, with the ability to toggle on and off your account per device. We also found a new section for cameras on this screen, which allows users to set permissions for viewing your camera streams and recordings. The options are “No Access”, “Stream Only”, and “Stream & View Recordings”.

Moving over to the device specific options, we now see an option labeled “Scenes” when going into an accessory’s settings. Located just underneath the “Status” option, the Scenes menu provides a list of all the scenes that a device is a part of, and offers the ability to quickly jump into editing the scene. If an accessory is not currently a part of a scene, this option will be listed as “Suggested Scenes”, and functions as it sounds.

Splash Screens

No new splash screens added.

Bugs & Remaining Issues

It looks like the alignment issues that have been around for a number of beta releases is still prominent in iOS 13.1 beta 1. Also sticking around is the card scan image overlay that we have been mentioning since the 3rd developer beta of iOS 13.

Sadly, iOS 13.1 does not seem to resolve the most prominent issue with the iOS Home App, which is sensor grouping. For some reason, Apple seems to be ignoring the feedback from the community regarding the lack of glanceable access to metrics such as temperature, air quality, and humidity when a device has more then one sensor, which was in previous versions of iOS.

As previously mentioned, personal automations and shortcuts have been restored in iOS 13.1 beta 1. This means that we can now build and deploy automations that involve shortcuts which lead to more robust and powerful sequences of events. When creating an automation in the Home app, the option is displayed as “Convert to Shortcut” and can be found at the bottom of your device list.
