The Philips Hue Smart Plug, announced back in June, hit the market just a few weeks later in most countries around the world, except for North America. This is changing though, as retail giant Best Buy is now listing the plug as available for purchase in the United States, and the Philips Hue online store now shows them available as well, albeit with the message “Item almost out of stock”. The plug should be a hit during the holiday season due to the strength of the Hue brand, so it may be worth picking some up soon if you are interested.
The plug, which retails for $39.99 is another in the line of updated Hue devices that includes both Bluetooth and Zigbee connectivity, giving users the ability to control the plug right out of the box with their phone. HomeKit support of course, requires that users have the Philips Hue Hub, which is sold separately, but is in many homes due to the popularity of the brands smart lighting. The hub also brings greater reliability, speed, and makes it available when out of your home, making it a no-brainer if you plan on purchasing one.
Curiously, Signify markets the plug as being another way to add other forms of lighting into the ecosystem, suggesting that it isn’t suited for other electrical devices, which it is if they are under 15amps. Also the marketing message seems to have caused some confusion, with a review on the Philips Hue website mentioning that they expected dimming capabilities to be included, so just keep in mind that this is only a plug. In addition to Best Buy, we expect to see the plug available on Amazon soon, as the listing has been ready for quite a while, just waiting for the plug to arrive.
